“உருத்திராட்சம்”  என்பது  ‘உருத்திரனாகிய சிவபெருமானின் கண்களிலிருந்து தோன்றிய நீர் ஆகும்’.

அதாவது, ‘தேவர்கள் அசுரர்களால் வதை படும் துன்பத்தினை தாங்க முடியாமல் உருத்திரனின் கண்களிலிருந்து வடிந்த நீரே  “ உருத்திராட்சம்” ஆனது.  

இதில் ‘உருத்’ என்பது ‘துக்கம்’ என்றும், ’ரன்’ என்பது  ‘ஓட்டுபவன்’ என்றும் பொருள்படும்.  “உருத்திராட்சம்” என்பது ‘துக்கத்தினை ஓட்டுவது’ அல்லது ‘துக்கத்தை வெளிப்படுத்துவது’ என்று பொருள்.

•           சிவநேத்திரம்
•                   அக்கமணி
•                   கண்மணி

என்று பல பெயர்களால் அழைக்கப்படுகிறது.

      ·        சிவநேத்திரம் என்பது ‘சிவபெருமானின் கண்களிலிருந்து தோன்றியதால் இப்பெயர் பெற்றது.

•  அக்கமணி என்பது ‘அண்டசராசரத்தை ஆளும் தலைவனுடைய  கண்களிலிருந்து வந்த மணித்துளி’ என்று பொருள் படும்.

      ·      கண்மணி என்பது 'கண்களிலிருந்து வடிந்த கண்ணீர்த்துளி என்று பொருள்படும்.    

                          இந்த மணித்துளி புனித ஆகாய கங்கையை காட்டிலும் சிறந்ததாக கருதப்படுகிறது. எனவே இதனை அணிந்தவர்கள் “புனித ஆகாயகங்கையில் மூழ்கியதை காட்டிலும் அதிக நற்பயன்களை பெறுவார்கள்” என்பது குறிப்பிடத்தக்கது. 

• இது “ஐயத்தினால் ஏற்படும் மரணத்தினை” தடுக்கும்  “காயகற்ப மூலிகை”  ஆகும்.
• உருத்திராட்சத்தை கொண்டு செய்யப்படும்"உருத்திராட்சக்கருக்கு"  என்னும் மகிமை வாய்ந்த மருந்து 'கப நோய்களை வேருடன் அழிக்கக்கூடிய' ஈசனின் வல்லமைப் பெற்றது.
